Democratising infrared: the Deep Red Chair reaches the halfway stage of its work

The Deep Red chair aims to democratize infrared technology and its new uses (emergency braking assistance in cars, measuring the energy efficiency of buildings using thermography, etc.). To do this, it is important to understand how these images are perceived by non-specialists (link to cognitive science). It carries out activities aimed at the general public and runs numerous projects in collaboration with schools. Grenoble INP-UGA and laboratories Gipsa-lab and INRIA. Halfway through its program, significant progress has been made thanks to a series of innovative projects, all led by committed students and researchers.

Educational and academic achievements

1. Student challenges

  • Creativity challenge in 2022 at Grenoble INP – Ense³, UGA : Forty students worked on the theme “How can infrared be democratized?”, with the highlight being an immersive restaurant concept that won the Grand Prix du jury award.
  • DataChallenge in 2022 at Grenoble INP – Phelma, UGA : The students explored methods for finding the best representation of 16-bit images.
  • Escape Game: The Pelican Investigation in 2023/2024: Creation and facilitation of an educational escape game, “The Pelican Investigation,” presented at Tech&Fest 2024. This project, carried out by students from five different schools (Ensimag, Ense³, Polytech Grenoble, Phelma, ENSAG) and presented at Tech&Fest 2024, illustrates the fun and innovative use of infrared technology.

2. Engineering projects

  • Creation of a model of a dwelling for popularize thermography with students from Grenoble INP – Ense³, UGA (2023, 2025)
  • Setting up eye-tracking experiments on the perception of infrared images (link to cognitive science) so that new users of infrared imaging can optimally understand the information contained in the images.
  • Creation of an IR-based game used in an escape game with students from Polytech Grenoble – INP, UGA (2024, 2025)
  • Development of a posture recognition game based on infrared cameras with students from Grenoble INP – Ense³, UGA (2024, 2025). This game has been integrated into the escape game.

3. Outreach activities

  • Science Festival (2022, 2023): Nearly 200 students discovered the properties of infrared through demonstrations at the GIPSA-Lab.
  • Kaleidoscope Week (2024, 2025): An introductory course on infrared technology was given to 60 second-year students as part of the introductory classes organized by Grenoble INP – UGA.

 Advances in applied research

1. Theses and postdoctoral studies

  • Thesis (2023–2026): Work on multispectral detection (RGB-IR) for driver assistance and the protection of vulnerable road users

  • Parallax correction for merging infrared and visible images (2022).

A shared vision: democratizing infrared technology

All these projects, whether educational, academic, or research-based, contribute to a central goal: making infrared technology accessible to a wide audience and expanding its applications. By involving students, researchers, and industry professionals, the Deep Red Chair plays a key role in popularizing and promoting the adoption of this promising technology.

The chair continues to inspire vocations, foster collaborations, and propose innovative solutions in a variety of fields.

Stay tuned to follow the next steps of this exciting program!
