Chaire Electronique Durable

Training tomorrow's engineers in sustainability issues in electronics

A teaching chair aimed at integrating environmental and societal issues into the core curriculum for electronics engineers.

The Sustainable Electronics Chair is supported by the Grenoble INP Foundation, thanks to sponsorship from several major companies in the sector: Elsys Design (Groupe Advans), LYNRED (skills sponsorship), STMicroelectronics and Thales. This program aims to prepare future engineers for the challenges of ecological and societal transition in the field of electronics. This innovative educational program is part of an approach to transform practices by integrating the concepts of simple design, repairability, reuse, recyclability, and industrial effluent treatment into the training program.

Given the scarcity of materials, their energy costs, and their environmental impact, the chair proposes rethinking electronic design: using just the right amount of resources, favoring modest but efficient circuits, and designing electronic boards that can be recycled in economically viable conditions. It also invites us to question the real usefulness of electronic objects, to avoid unnecessary production.

Spanning three years, the chair draws on the expertise of its partners to offer course modules, conferences, hackathons, and educational resources, which will ultimately be available for distribution in academic and industrial settings. This educational initiative is based on seven training programs from Grenoble INP – Phelma, UGA, the National School of Physics, Electronics, and Materials.

“Through this chair, we want to raise awareness and train our students in sustainable electronics, in all its technical, environmental, and societal dimensions, while drawing on the practical expertise of our industrial partners. In this way, we are giving them all the skills they need to bring about sustainable change in the industry.”
